Online Education: The Disadvantages

There are so many advantages to getting an education and a college degree online. But where there are advantages, you can bet there will always be disadvantages.

Online education and online degrees aren't an exception to the rule.

While the advantages are many, one should also look at the disadvantages before opting for taking college courses or getting an online college degree. You always want to have all of the information available before you make a decision that will affect your future.

One very real disadvantage of taking college courses and getting a college degree online is the lack of oral communication between professors or instructors and their students. The English language is full of nuances that can only be communicated orally.

Another disadvantage of taking college courses and getting a college degree online is the lack of socialization with other students.

Much of the success that is achieved in some fields require a network of people who have a history of association. College is where many of these friends and acquaintances are made.

All businesses do not accept college educations that were acquired online as valid. Some of them even think that a college diploma from an online university or college is completely worthless.

Not all businesses think like that, and slowly most are being dragged into the twenty-first century and are beginning to recognize the value of online diplomas. But not all....and not yet.

All of the courses required for a college degree are not available online...sometimes. Most are, that is true.

But it is important to learn before you begin an online program if you can get every single course required for a degree in your chosen field online.

Like everything else that is worthwhile, there is fraud in the world of online college courses and college degrees.

It is very important to learn whether a college is an accredited institution before you sign up.

Religious Degrees Online

People get online religious degrees online every day. It is not an unusual circumstance.

There are brick-and-mortar schools dedicated to religious instruction and preparation of students for careers that are religion-based, of course, but these schools are not located in places that are convenient or even possible for many who would like to earn a degree in religion to attend.

Additionally, people who wand to earn degrees in religion want to earn them based upon the religion that they practice and believe in. That is where online degrees in religion can help.

No matter what religious beliefs that you want your degree in religion to be based upon, you can find an online degree program that will meet your requirements.

An evangelical Christian will want to enroll in a program that is based upon his evangelical religious beliefs, for example.

Many people enroll in online or distance learning religious education courses to learn to read Arabic or Hebrew.

Some people enroll in religious courses online to simply satisfy their curiosity or to gain a greater understanding of their faith.

Many churches stipulate that their ministers, associate ministers, and youth counselors have college diplomas....not all, of course, but some.

Organized religions all have a business structure, and some religions demand that those who work within that business structure are educated in the beliefs of the organization as well as in business.

Online education, or distance learning as it is sometimes called, can make earning a degree in religion much easier and less expensive for students.

Oftentimes brick-and-mortar schools that teach religion are even more financially strapped than other learning institutions, and tuition can be very expensive. Online education and earning an online degree can be done for a fraction of the cost.

The Challenges of Getting an Online Degree
Online Degree Cost Comparison

There is simply not much of a cost comparison in dollar bills to be made between the cost of earning and on-site or and online degree. Online cost wins hands down!

It is SO much cheaper to attend college online than it is to attend college on-site (i.e. traditional college campus) -- in money. But, as an old friend once told me, “You always give up something for something.”

It is absolutely true that a degree obtained online is exactly the same as the same degree obtained at a brick-and-mortar university. There is no difference at all. The requirements are the same.

The same number of credit hours is required, and the same courses must be successfully completed. One is just as good as the other in most instances. There are, however, major differences in the experience.

Those differences need to be entered as part of the equation when a person is in a position to choose between getting an online degree or a traditional on-site degree.

When getting a degree at a traditional college or university, a student is required to attend classes on specific days of the week and at specific times.

When getting a degree online, specific days and times don't come into play. Schedules are flexible. The same work must be completed, but the time in which that work must be completed is less fixed. Well, chalk that one up for online degrees.

Degrees obtained in the traditional college setting allow students the ability to interact with other students and with their professors and instructors.

Degrees obtained online do not allow for that interaction with other students or with instructors or professors. Well, chalk that one up for traditional colleges.

The bottom line is that there are advantages as well as disadvantages for both choices. Remember...you always give up something for something.
